Jason Matthys is a prolific strain hunter and seed maker. In 2014 he single handedly founded Equilibrium Genetics, a preeminent licensed seed company, to preserve the diversity of cannabis genetics for future generations. From humble beginnings, Equilibrium Genetics has grown into one of the largest and best known cannabis genetics businesses in the state of California.
Equilibrium Genetics is a sungrown cannabis brand. Their seeds are made in the Mendocino County sunlight, on a small family farm in the Anderson Valley. They produce hybrid, heirloom, and landrace cannabis seeds while helping people legally access a wide variety of cannabis genetics.
After starting Equilibrium Genetics, he organized the cannabis movement in Santa Cruz County to defend the rights of patients and cultivators. In coordination with many other activists, he led a successful local
referendum to overturn the cannabis cultivation ban in 2015.
Jason's take on natural vs feminized seeds
Regular (natural) seeds are made the way seeds have been produced for thousands of years. They are healthy and vigorous, and there are many more varieties available in regular seeds vs feminized. Regular seeds contain approximately 50% female and 50% male plants, so the cultivator will remove the male plants once they are found in the garden, leaving the females to mature.
Feminized seeds are made using a process that "reverses" females, whereby female plants are able to pollinate other female plants. This creates seeds that are 99.9% female, and for some cultivators this is an advantage as they can be near certain that their crop will be all female from the
start. There is generally less variety available in feminized seeds, and they can be a bit more expensive than regular seeds.
